OUT THE FRAME

Writing Optional

Realizing that by nature I am a creative person - it is important to me to maintain some sense of separation between work and pleasure. Writing has long been a passion of mine. At one point I knew I would be a writer, a novelist of some sort. That dream bobbed and weaved into photo-journalism and though that too did not become my career; I have managed to find my nib in the ink. The launch of N° 70, a monthly digital journalistic style magazine, grants me permission to write. Here is my opportunity to be the writer, to explore an idea of photo-journalism.

Each month I’ll attempt to uncover a layer of my personal self and the things that motivate, interest, and challenge me. Typically titled “Letter from the Editor” I’ve named my own “Two Cent” as it is just that. My two cent on whatever is top of mind at that moment.

Please enjoy this excerpt from “Two Cent” from the first issue of N° 70 here.

Every time I type out my business name, Grammarly quickly refers me back to it as though I've got it all wrong. No, I meant to type "Out The Frame" not 'out of the frame' not 'out of frame'. You see as beautiful as any single photo may be - no matter the subject, there is always just a bit more just out the frame. Out of eyesight to the viewer of the final image, there's much more. There are complexities in a person's life that you can't quite capture; there is a hostess not too far quite capture; there is a hostess not too far from that pic you just snapped of your dinner. What I mean by out the frame is that there is more to the person, to the food, to the product that is IN frame. Make yourself question what more do I need to know? Who is this person? Be curious and believe me, what you observe or may learn will likely force you to appreciate what you see within the frame more.
